Anderlecht is the location of the Cureghem Cellars, a subterranean complex of handmade brick caves with Romanesque vaults and arches the site of a cattle market covered by a forged-iron roof construction in the s; the cellars were a foundation for the upper structure until the s, after which the city council decided to make better use of them.
It proved more profitable to grow mushrooms in the dark and damp underground spaces for local consumption, it fell into disuse as a cattle market but, in , the hall g. It is named after John Berchmans ; the school had students that same year. However, in , the Jesuits were ordered to cease providing educational services by Pope Clement XIV ; the school was closed on 20 September The furniture was confiscated and sold and in , the building became a court house; the Belgian state archives were housed in the building.
In , the archives were moved and the building was razed to make way for a road. In , the expanding population forced the Jesuits to not only expand the college but to look for a location for a new college. Starting in the late s, a shift in language was made which would result in St John Berchmans College speaking Dutch and English and the French-speaking section of the college being transferred to St Michael's College.
Auderghem Auderghem or Oudergem is one of the nineteen municipalities located in the Brussels-Capital Region of Belgium. Located to the southeast of the capital, along the Woluwe valley and at the entrance to the Sonian Forest , the municipality has an environmental advantage. Three forest villages, were one for centuries.
In , the soldiers of the French Revolution decided to separate these into three distinct municipalities.
In , Napoleon decided to reunite the three villages, by imperial decree, into a single administrative entity. But Auderghem was withdrawn from this union by royal act. Thus, Auderghem became an independent municipality with only 1, inhabitants. With the construction of the rail line linking Brussels and Tervuren as well as, in , the construction of the Boulevard du Souverain or Vorstlaan, modernization came to the municipality and the population grew quickly.
The Priory of Val Duchesse or Hertoginnedal, a gift of the king, is rarely open to the public. In , Belgium's cabinet ministers met here, planting the seeds of a federalization of the country though at conditions fiercely criticised in some extremist Flemish nationalist circles; the Chapel of Saint Anne, whose origins go back to the 12th century, is not open to the public.
Decommissioned in , it was sold several times. Its splendid sculptures from the Middle Ages and notable period furniture are still there to admire; the municipality offers many green spaces.
